Linking with Cornell SET Partners
Cornell Cooperative Extension has had a long-standing partnership with many Cornell Departments that have a SET focus, including: Animal Science, Natural Resources, Division of Nutritional Sciences, Fiber Science and Apparel Design, Entomology, Soil Science. Fabulous resources and activities are offered to the 4-H community through these departments.
We are also developing new partnerships to provide training, educational and programming resources for CCE staff and audiences. Newer partnerships include:
Department of Entomology – Ladybug Project – efforts to promote and infuse the Lost Ladybug project into the CCE youth outreach system.
Museum of the Earth – over the next two years the Paleontological Research Institution will be working with the CCE 4-H Youth Development program to recruit and train educators to work with upper elementary and secondary school youth on citizen science, monitoring temperature and precipitation, and relating it to climate. This project will directly train participants to connect with the Community Collaborative Rain, Hail, and Snow Network (CoCoRaHS). The hope is to develop young scientists, and create a personal connection for them between science, data collection and community. First educator training is scheduled for 3/10 & 11.
The Department of Astronomy has been coordinating staff and teacher trainings, and seeking additional funding to partner with CCE youth programs. Some counties have already partnered with the Department for Afterschool staff training and camp staff training.
New efforts from the Division of Nutritional Sciences has extended the Choose Health efforts to Camp staff and in the development of a Choose Health Ambassador program.
Geospatial science programs through the Institute for Resource Information Sciences, IRIS, through Smith Lever support is promoting geospatial science programs to 4-H in NYS tying programs in to traditional outreach efforts like Career Explorations and State Fair. Leader Trainings have been offered, support has been shared through ESRI and the Dept.
