4-H Salute to Excellence Volunteer Recognition Awards – Nominations Due Nov 13
Volunteers are, undeniably, the “heart and soul” of 4-H, and in an age when time is at a premium, Salute to Excellence serves as an opportunity to acknowledge our volunteers’ unwavering dedication to the 4-H Youth Development movement.
Each year, state 4-H programs are invited to nominate two outstanding individual volunteers, one in each of two categories. The Lifetime Volunteer Award is given to an individual who has spent 10 or more years volunteering for 4-H. The Volunteer of the Year Award is given to an individual who has volunteered for 4-H less than 10 years. Recipients of the 4-H Salute to Excellence Volunteer Recognition Awards are chosen from nominees submitted by state 4-H offices.
In 2010, regional honorees will be selected. Each region will have its own Outstanding Lifetime Volunteer and Volunteer of the Year. The eight regional winners become nominees for the national award, and one volunteer from each category will be named the national winner. Our New York State Volunteer of the Year nominees, Michelle Martin ‘08 from Rensselaer County and Connie Cockrell ‘09, from Fulton/Montgomery Counties, were each one of the eight regional winners!
Recipients will be presented with a monetary award (to be donated to a local 4-H program of the recipient’s choosing). National awardees will also have their name engraved on the Salute to Excellence Perpetual Plaque located at the National 4-H Conference Center.
2010 nomination materials and additional details can be found on the State 4-H Staff Volunteerism webpage at: http://nys4h-staff.cce.cornell.edu/volunteerism.php
under “New: 2010 Salute to Excellence Awards.” Past New York State Fair 4-H Volunteers of the Day are wonderful candidates to consider.
Nomination forms and three letters of recommendations are due by email to Kim Fleming (kff2@cornell.edu) in the New York State 4-H Office by November 13, 2009. Incomplete applications will not be accepted. Each CCE Association may nominate one Lifetime Volunteer Award Candidate and one Volunteer of the Year Award Candidate.

Everyone Ready – sign up now to start at the beginning
Dear Colleagues,
Hopefully you read about Everyone Ready in my 10/14/09 email (see below). It’s not too late to get started. In fact, I just completed the introductory session, “Building a Foundation for Volunteer Involvement,” myself – and it truly is a good foundation for all.
A note from our national 4-H point person, Sheri Seibold, says:
“Participation in Everyone Ready has been fantastic! We have over 1200 registered with more being added daily.”
Currently, the September, “Building a Foundation for Volunteer Involvement” and the October Self-Instruction Guide module on “Focus on the Volunteer Program Manager” is available to be completed by November 15, 2009. At that point, we will be getting a usage report for New York State and some evaluation comments. So be sure and get involved now.
The session starting on November 16, 2009 will be the first in-depth subject matter session. The topic is “New Approaches to Recruitment” and should be of interest to all Extension staff working with volunteers. You will notice that the web pages are constantly being updated and new questions and answers added. New Volunteerism for the Next Generation Fact Sheets will be posted in the next couple of weeks as well. If you have questions or comments, please feel free to contact Sheri Seibold, Extension Everyone Ready Point Person at sseibold@illinois.edu or by calling 217.333.9290.
To get started, get registered at www.4-h.org/volunteerism . Go to the Everyone Ready® section and click on Register. Once you have completed the registration information, you will receive an email confirmation and will then have a user name and password that you can use to enter the “Extension” Everyone Ready® page. Follow directions from there. I did it, so you can do it!
Any questions contact Kim Fleming at kff2@cornell.edu.
