Public meeting at 6:30 PM on Thursday, July 17, 2008 - Greene, NY

Contact: Bradd Vickers, President of Chenango County Farm Bureau, 607-334-6061

NYS Dep. of Environmental Conservation (DEC) Natural Gas Exploration Meeting

Rural land owners and interested parties are invited to a public meeting at 6:30 PM on Thursday, July 17, 2008 conducted by DEC at Greene High School, 40 South Canal St., Greene, NY 13778.

This is an opportunity to learn about natural gas exploration information, state drilling laws, oversight, natural gas leasing and the possible impacts of exploration activities. The meeting is a follow up to the packed informational meeting sponsored by Chenango County Farm Bureau & The Greater Greene Chamber of Commerce on June 17th.

Chenango County Farm Bureau President Bradd Vickers said he has been getting lots of calls on who is the watch dog agency and who to call with concerns related to drilling operations. Vickers said this is a great opportunity to find out if DEC will require metal tanks for “fracing” solutions as is required in many other states, particularly in flood plains. Will the local municipal disposal facilities be permitted or required to handle the “fracing” fluids? Will an updated GEIS and SEQR be done for this area? Who is responsible for assuring the safety of a water supply public or private? What protections do unleased landowners have? Vickers said in a recent meeting in Monticello, NY with DEC Executive Deputy Commissioner - Stuart Gruskin & Brad Field Director of the Bureau of Resource Management and Development along with Assemblyman Bill Parment and other legislators, some of this information was discussed. Vickers said he felt that Deputy Commissioner Gruskin was more receptive to the public’s concerns.

Staff from DEC’s Mineral Resources Division will be on hand to provide an overview, followed by a question-and-answer session.

    Hi Mark,
I was wondering if you got an answer to your question. We have property on Hogsback but live in PA and also missed the last meeting. Any info would be appreciated.
