Job Description

   

Description
The Institute for Invasive Species Research (IISR) located at Cornell University provides leadership in the field of invasive species, coordinates research, and integrates related outreach for New York State and northeastern US and southeastern Canada generally.The Coordinator will serve as the point of contact for the IISR, as well as help to develop research priorities and needs, develop partnerships among experts in government agencies, academia, and the private sector, facilitate and coordinate research efforts, and ensure their integration with extension/outreach activities. The Coordinator will identify, catalog, and, as appropriate, seek funding from sources typical for academic institutions. The Coordinator will organize and host periodic meetings/conferences that bring together specialists to share ongoing research efforts and to help build connections among the many invasive species programs in the region and across the country.

The Coordinator will play a major communications role by preparing reports and impact statements that highlight the contributions made by the IISR to academic, government, and public audiences. The Coordinator will ensure an IISR Internet presence, including a regional invasive species research and outreach database. The Coordinator will report to, and receive guidance from, the executive committee of the IISR advisory committee.

Qualifications
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

M.S. (Ph.D. preferred) in applied field ecology or an ecologically based pest management-related field. Broad knowledge and experience related to invasive species is required. An ability to effectively interact and communicate with academics, extension personnel, government entities and the public is required. Previous experience with invasive species research/education is desirable. Candidates with strong organizational and interpersonal skills and a team-oriented approach are most likely to succeed.

GREEN TEEN COMMUNITY GARDENING PROGRAM__

· Youth mentor and garden assistant for Green Teen Community Gardening program of Cornell Cooperative Extension Dutchess County__

· Education of youth and teens in areas of life and work skills through gardening and the food system.__

· Full time position; 35 hours per week with benefits (potential 40 hours per week in summer); some evening and weekend hours.__

· Gardening creation and maintenance in conjunction with program activities__

_Requirements:_

Associate’s Degree and 2 years work-related experience; or High School Diploma or GED and 4 years experience.

_Major Duties:_

· Assist in the development, coordination and implementation of a city-based youth and teen (ages 7-18) gardening education program. Provide educational programming to underserved youth from the City of Beacon through gardening, ecology and food system activities in after school programs, during school hours, and in summer programs. Provide life skills and work skills information and experiences under the guidance of supervisor. Interact with public through community projects, such as managing a stand at the farmer’s market. Participate as a team member with other staff. Use of good judgment and initiative a must. Some record keeping and documentation required. Ability to undertake physical work in garden required. Transportation of supplies and youth to programs within and outside of Poughkeepsie is also required.

· General knowledge regarding youth education and empowerment

*Description:
*The Cornell Agricultural Outreach and Education program is searching for a dynamic person to fill the position of *Youth Program Specialist.* The person will provide program management support for the state agricultural education program as State Executive Coordinator of the New York FFA Association. Responsibilities will include: providing overall leadership for the New York State Association of FFA, the New York State Association of FFA State Officer Team, and maintaining the State FFA membership roster. Serve as the Executive Director of the New York State Association of FFA Governing Board and provide it with the following services, manage and coordinate New York State FFA Career Development Events on the district, sub-state and state level; coordinate, manage and plan the annual State FFA Convention, maintain correspondence with the National FFA, state agricultural education teachers, and agricultural education students/FFA members. Provide leadership and management of the State Officer Team at various agricultural events. Work cooperatively and provide necessary management for the New York Association of Agricultural Educators and New York FFA Foundation Board. Other duties will include managing and maintaining the New York State FFA web site http://www.nysffa.org/index.php, distributing information for the Agricultural Education Outreach Program and the New York State Association of FFA to agricultural program directors and educators, and working with the staff of Agricultural Outreach and Education on an as needed basis. *Bachelors degree in agricultural education is required, although a Masters degree is preferred, and 2-3 years teaching experience or equivalent will be required. The successful candidate will possess a working knowledge and understanding of agriculture, agricultural literacy, and food system concepts; curriculum development and teaching experience; aptitude and skills with standard computer software including Microsoft programs and HTML programming; exemplary communication, interpersonal, and organization skills and proven history of working successfully in a team-based environment; management experience in working with youth organizations; ability to build and maintain professional relationships with partners of Agricultural Education and Outreach, as well as various constituents including faculty, staff and students; ability to multi-task, prioritize work and maintain flexibility in a dynamic working environment; and a proven ability to handle confidential information. Provide accountability and ethical judgment on behalf of Agricultural Education and Outreach and Cornell; promote and understand the perspectives/diversity of the partners affiliated with AEO; and be able to work with a diverse population of consumers. Effective problem-solving skills and ability to change program objectives as needed. Must be able to function independently often determining priorities and procedures within very general guidelines and possess a valid drivers license. The successful candidate will be working on a grant program; the position will be a one year term appointment with the possibility for renewal on an annual basis.
